The Toyota Yaris is a subcompact car available in both sedan and hatchback body styles, though availability varies by region. In Pakistan, only the sedan version is offered. The Yaris is also known by different names globally, such as Vitz, Platz, Belta, Echo, and Vios. These models are imported to Pakistan as they are not manufactured locally. Despite the various names, the Yaris maintains Toyota’s reputation for reliability.
Launched in 1999 as the XP10, the first-generation Yaris was available in sedan, hatchback, and coupe body styles in many regions. The hatchback was often called Vitz, while the sedan and coupe were known as Platz. Notable features included power steering, power windows, power mirrors, and airbags.
The second-generation Yaris, the XP90, was released in 2005 and produced until 2013. This generation dropped the coupe style, with the sedan often referred to as Belta and the hatchback as Vitz.
The third generation, XP130, was manufactured from 2013 to 2020. In some regions, the hatchback was released in 2011, followed by the sedan in 2013.
The fourth-generation Yaris, launched in 2020 and built on the GA-B platform, debuted in Japan in February 2020. It is available in G, X, and Z trims, with a four-wheel-drive variant introduced in April 2020. This generation has yet to be launched in Pakistan, where the third-generation sedan, originally introduced in 2013, is currently available.
Before the locally-manufactured Yaris sedan, the Toyota Vitz hatchback was popular in Pakistan. Currently, five variants of the third-generation Yaris are available in Pakistan: 1.3L GLI manual, 1.3L GLI CVT, 1.3L ATIV MT, 1.3L ATIV CVT, and 1.5L ATIV X CVT. The resale market for the Yaris and Vitz is active, with spare parts readily available and maintenance costs generally low, though some imported parts can be expensive.
The Toyota Yaris is competitively priced compared to the Honda City in Pakistan.
The Toyota Yaris features a design similar to the discontinued Xli and GLi models but with a more aggressive look. All variants have four-beam halogen headlamps, with daytime running lights, partial chrome plating, and fog lamps available only in the top variants. The side view includes body-colored door handles for lower variants and chrome handles for higher variants. All variants have body-colored side mirrors with integrated turn indicators. The rear features LED line guide lamps, with chrome garnish and a rear camera in the top variants.
The interior of the Yaris is sleek and clean. The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable, with control switches for audio, Bluetooth, and in higher trims, multi-information display (MID). The top variants feature chrome inner door handles, while lower variants have silver-painted or pigmented handles. Standard features across all variants include an illuminated entry system, power windows, central door locking, and a front personal lamp. Air conditioning is standard, with auto climate control in higher variants. Audio systems range from a 3-line LCD display in lower trims to a 6.8-inch capacitive touchscreen in higher trims, with two to six speakers depending on the variant. Safety features include two airbags, an immobilizer, vehicle safety control with traction control, hill start assist, and an anti-lock braking system with EBD and brake assist.
The Yaris offers 1.3L and 1.5L in-line four-cylinder engines with 16-valve DOHC and dual VVT-i technology. Manual variants have a 5-speed transmission, while automatic variants feature a 7-speed CVT with a sport sequential shiftmatic system. The Yaris is known for its ease of handling, especially in urban settings, and has satisfactory brakes with minimal body roll.
The Yaris offers good fuel economy, achieving 14.9 km/l with a 1.5L engine and 16 km/l with a 1.3L engine in city driving. The 1.5L engine can reach speeds of up to 190 km/h, accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 10.2 seconds. The 1.3L engine takes about 13 seconds for the same acceleration.
The Yaris is easy to handle, particularly for city driving, with smooth navigation through sharp turns and curves. However, its highway performance is not as strong.
The Yaris benefits from readily available spare parts and low maintenance costs, although some imported body parts can be expensive.
The Yaris faces competition from the Proton Saga, Changan Alsvin, and Honda City in Pakistan. The Honda City offers similar safety features, better mileage, and more space, but the Yaris provides a more powerful engine and larger fuel capacity at a lower price. The Proton Saga, a new and popular option, is smaller and has less fuel capacity. The Changan Alsvin offers luxury features like a powerful engine, climate control, and leather seats, but the Yaris stands out with its larger size and greater fuel capacity.
