The Toyota Aqua, first launched in 2011, quickly became one of the most successful nameplates in Japan. Initially showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2011, the first generation received facelifts in 2014 and again in 2017 with the introduction of the Aqua Crossover.

The second-generation Toyota Aqua, released in 2021, offers four variants: B, X, G, and Z.

Exterior: The new Toyota Aqua boasts a sporty and sleek design. Its front features a chrome grille complemented by LED headlamps and fog lamps. The sides are adorned with auto-retractable mirrors and 16-inch alloy rims, while the rear includes LED taillamps, a purposeful spoiler, and an intermittent rear window wiper. The overall look is modern and appealing.

Interior: Inside, the Toyota Aqua offers a comfortable and inviting environment. The seats, wrapped in high-grade fabric, are adjustable, with the driver and front passenger seats featuring recline and fore/aft adjustments, and the driver’s seat offering cushion adjustment. The rear seats can split 60/40 to increase boot space.

The 2024 Aqua includes a push start/stop button and various advanced features. The 4-spoke steering wheel supports tilt and telescopic adjustments and includes switches for climate control, Bluetooth, and audio controls. A 4.2-inch digital TFT multi-information display panel is centrally positioned on the dashboard for a modern look.

The center fascia houses a 6.1-inch touch panel display with navigation, radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and a wireless audio system. A 6-speaker audio system ensures a quality listening experience. Additional features include automatic air conditioning with climate control, a cabin air filter, rear heat ducts, power door locks, power windows, a rearview camera, and a smart key system with a driver door handle touch lock/unlock sensor.

The Aqua also offers two driving modes: EV mode and ECO mode.

Safety: The Toyota Aqua is equipped with modern safety features, including Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST). Additional safety features include SRS airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, cruise control, a Vehicle Proximity Notification System, and various indicators for low washer fluid, door ajar, driver and front passenger seatbelt warnings, and key reminder warnings.

Engine: The Aqua is powered by a 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve engine paired with a sealed nickel-metal hydride HV battery. This hybrid system is coupled with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Ride & Handling: The Toyota Aqua offers easy handling and is user-friendly, making it suitable even for beginners. Its hybrid engine provides swift responses, even at high speeds, with minimal body roll, ensuring easy maneuverability through sharp turns. While its low body frame requires caution over bumps, the Aqua is well-suited for both daily commutes and long trips.

Maintenance: Maintaining the Toyota Aqua is straightforward, with auto parts readily available in the local market.

Competitors: The Toyota Aqua competes with models such as the Honda Fit, Nissan Note, and Toyota Prius.

Overall, the Toyota Aqua stands out with its blend of sporty design, advanced features, and reliable performance, making it a strong contender in its segment.
